Los Altos Hills Real Estate: Preserves, Weather and Transit
Los Altos Hills is a Town of public paths, open-space preserves and riding grounds, with its shops and its trains next door in Los Altos and Mountain View. This guide shows what the place is like, how the weather runs, how you get around by bus and road, and how school seats are assigned by address.
💡 Key Insights & Takeaways
- Los Altos Hills has no rail station and no conventional shopping district, so Main Street, State Street, Safeway and Draeger's Market are all across the boundary in Los Altos.
- Byrne Preserve, Westwind Community Barn and Purissima Park give you walking paths, horse lessons and ball fields inside the Town, and Byrne Preserve does not allow bicycles.
- VTA Route 52 takes 22 minutes from Foothill College to Mountain View on its 7:52 AM weekday trip, and that time leaves out your ride to the college and the wait for the bus.
- A weather station in Palo Alto, not in the Town, shows a July high of 79.4°F and a January high of 57.8°F in its 1991–2020 normals.
- School seats follow your address, the Town sits in more than one district, and an approved transfer is a separate process from the address assignment.
A weather station 4.4 miles away in Palo Alto records 12.0 days a year at or above 90°F, and Los Altos Hills has no rail station and no shopping district, as of 20 October 2026. Groceries and coffee are in Los Altos. Caltrain stops at stations outside the Town.

What is Los Altos Hills actually like?
Los Altos Hills is an incorporated Town, and this guide covers only the land inside its boundary. The City of Los Altos next door is a separate place, and so is the unincorporated land around the Town. Neither one is described as part of the Town here.
The Town has no conventional shopping district. Main Street and State Street are in downtown Los Altos, outside the Town. That is where you find Safeway on First Street, Draeger's Market, Los Altos Hardware, Red Berry Coffee Bar and the State Street Market food hall. The Los Altos Library, the Woodland Branch Library, the Los Altos History Museum and the Los Altos Community Center are in Los Altos too. This guide times no walk or drive to any of them.
What sits inside the Town is public land and a few civic landmarks. Town Hall and Foothill College are both in the Town. Edith Park sits where West Fremont Road meets West Edith Avenue. Purissima Park has public ball fields on Purissima Road, and the Town Riding Ring, a public riding arena, is on the same road. Westwind Community Barn on Altamont Road runs horse boarding, lessons and Town events, and Byrne Preserve has open-space paths off that road.
Juan Prado Mesa Preserve is reached from Dawson Drive and Stonebrook Road, so check the Town's route map for the road name before you go. Hale Creek marks the edge of the preserve. Neary Quarry is a landmark beside it, and this guide does not say you can enter it.
Beyond the Town line, Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve is a regional preserve next to the Town, with hiking and a few designated bicycle and horse routes. Deer Hollow Farm is a named farm destination in the same preserve system. Hidden Villa is a farm with trails off Moody Road, and its operator sets the hours and any summer closures. The Rhus Ridge trailhead area off Moody Road is regional open-space access, and where it sits against the Town boundary has not been certified.
Bicycles use hard-surface paths and roads in the Town, Byrne Preserve prohibits bicycles, and regional preserves have their own rules. Do not assume every path allows a bicycle.
Fremont Hills is a documented subdivision in the Town. This guide also uses the Page Mill Road and Moody Road corridor, the Elena Road corridor and the Westwind Barn and Byrne Preserve area as mapped areas, not as official neighborhoods.

What is the weather like in Los Altos Hills?
The weather record used here comes from a station in Palo Alto, 4.4 miles in a straight line from Edith Park. That station is not in the Town, so its numbers describe Palo Alto and not every street in Los Altos Hills. A normal here means the average for the years 1991 to 2020.
At the station, a normal July day tops out at 79.4°F and a normal January day at 57.8°F. The station averages 12.0 days a year at or above 90°F, which counts every day the high reached 90°F or more. That heat-day count draws on 18 years of readings. A normal year brings 15.12 inches of rain, and almost none of it falls in summer.
This page has no measurement of heat, fog, wind or sun for any single street, so do not assume the station's numbers match a particular lot. Dry summers and wetter winters are the pattern in the normals. That is a reason to ask any seller how the yard is watered in summer and how water drains in winter, and it is not a finding about any one lot.
How long does it take to get anywhere from Los Altos Hills?
You leave the Town to reach a train. No Caltrain or BART station sits inside the Town, and Caltrain is reached at San Antonio Station or Mountain View Station, both outside it. This page gives no door-to-door time to either station. It gives none to Stanford University, Stanford Health Care, Google in Mountain View, Apple Park in Cupertino or San Jose Mineta International Airport, because no verified time was found for those trips.
Two VTA buses serve Foothill College, which is inside the Town. They are Route 40 and Route 52. They are buses, not rail, and the gaps between them change through the morning, so do not expect a fixed interval. Route 52 runs from Foothill College to the Mountain View Transit Center, and the 7:52 AM weekday trip takes 22 minutes aboard. Route 40 takes a longer way through North Bayshore, and the 7:53 AM weekday trip takes 50 minutes aboard. Those times count the ride only. They leave out your trip to the college, the wait, any transfer and the last leg, and boarding at the college is not boarding at your door.
Route 40 has weekday, Saturday and Sunday timetables, and this page found only a weekday timetable for Route 52, so do not count on weekend service for Route 52. Both timetables took effect on 10 August 2026, and VTA lists a newer schedule from 26 October 2026, so check the current schedule before you plan a trip.
By road, Interstate 280, El Monte Road, Page Mill Road and Foothill Expressway are the mapped regional approaches. This page gives no drive time at peak hours, because none was verified. By bicycle, the Town's paths include roadside and off-road segments, and the path rules above apply.
Caption: Foothill College bus trips to Mountain View, timetables effective 10 August 2026. Times are aboard the bus only.
| Route | Trip | Time aboard | Service days |
|---|---|---|---|
| VTA 52 | Foothill College to Mountain View Transit Center, 7:52 AM weekday trip | 22 minutes | Weekday timetable only on this page |
| VTA 40 | Foothill College to Mountain View through North Bayshore, 7:53 AM weekday trip | 50 minutes | Weekday, Saturday and Sunday |
Which schools serve Los Altos Hills, and how are they assigned?
Your address decides your school, and the Town does not sit in one district. The Town describes the Los Altos School District and the Mountain View–Los Altos high school district as serving the south of the Town and Palo Alto Unified as serving the north. That is a broad guide only, and this page found no complete street-by-street split, so check each address.
Palo Alto Unified assigns a neighborhood school by residence. When a school is full, students can be placed at another school in the same cluster. A transfer is a separate process from your address assignment, and a transfer to Gardner Bullis Elementary School needs approval from both districts. Placement is never promised, and a school name on this page does not mean every Town address is assigned there.
Caption: Schools named in this guide and where each campus sits, as of 20 October 2026. Naming a school here says where it is and does not say it serves your address.
| School | Where the campus sits | District pathway |
|---|---|---|
| Gardner Bullis Elementary School | Inside the Town | Check the district locators |
| Lucille M. Nixon Elementary School | Palo Alto, outside the Town | Palo Alto Unified |
| Egan Junior High School | Los Altos, outside the Town | Los Altos School District |
| Ellen Fletcher Middle School | Palo Alto, outside the Town | Palo Alto Unified |
| Los Altos High School and Henry M. Gunn High School | Outside the Town | Named by the districts, set by address |
Where can I check schools and crime information for Los Altos Hills?
Big Data Realty does not rate schools or neighborhoods. Ratings and reviews are on GreatSchools. Each district has a locator that confirms which school an address is assigned to: Los Altos School District, Palo Alto Unified and Mountain View–Los Altos. The state publishes official school reports on the California School Dashboard. Check them for the most recent information, because boundaries and reports change every school year.
For crime information, check the most recent reports directly with the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff's official website, which serves the Town under contract.
Who does Los Altos Hills suit?
Los Altos Hills suits you if open land, paths and room for horses count for more than a short walk to a shop. It suits you if you are happy to drive or take a bus to reach groceries, coffee and a train. It works less well if a rail station near your door is the first thing on your list, because the Town has none. If you ride a bicycle, read the path rules first, since some paths and preserves do not allow bicycles. Your budget, your commute and how much land you want decide the rest, and this guide does not say which of those should win.
