Palo Alto Neighborhood Guide Real Estate: Weather, Transit, Living

Palo Alto is a Santa Clara County city with two separate downtown shopping streets, Caltrain stations inside its limits, and a long run of parks and preserves. This page explains what the place is like, how the weather behaves, how trains and buses connect it, and how schools are assigned. Prices and the houses themselves are covered on the other two tabs.

💡 Key Insights & Takeaways

  • Palo Alto has two Caltrain stations, Palo Alto and California Avenue, and Express Train 507 runs 39 scheduled minutes from Palo Alto to San Francisco, before your walk and your wait.
  • University Avenue and California Avenue are separate shopping and dining streets, with a Saturday farmers market downtown and a Sunday farmers market on California Avenue.
  • NOAA's Palo Alto station records 12.0 days a year with a high of 90°F or more and 15.12 inches of rain a year, from 1991 to 2020 normals.
  • The city limit and the school district boundary do not match, so you confirm the school for a specific address with the district, and choice programs run separately.
  • The preserves follow different rules, because Foothills allows bicycles on paved roads only, while Pearson-Arastradero has trails open to cyclists and horse riders, with closures after rain.
As of 15 October 2026, Palo Alto's citywide Bike Score is 91, its Walk Score is 61 and its Transit Score is 37. These are city averages, so a single address can score higher or lower. The downtown streets, the two markets and the preserves fill in the rest of the picture.

What is Palo Alto actually like?

Palo Alto is a city in Santa Clara County. This page covers the incorporated city only, so East Palo Alto and the Stanford campus, which is unincorporated, are not part of it. A mailing address or a ZIP code does not tell you which side of that line a home sits on. Hours, closures and schedules in this guide were last checked on 4 October 2026, and nothing after that date is confirmed.
Daily life centers on two separate streets. University Avenue is the downtown shopping and dining street. A half block of Ramona Street, between Hamilton Avenue and University Avenue, is closed to cars as part of an outdoor business-space program. Lytton Plaza, a 0.2-acre public plaza, sits on University Avenue, and so does the Stanford Theatre, a classic-film house. The Landmark Aquarius Theatre, a two-screen cinema for independent and foreign-language films, is on Emerson Street, where Whole Foods Market is also found. Coupa Café has two downtown locations, one on Ramona Street and one on Lytton Avenue.
California Avenue is a different district with its own dining and shopping. The stretch between El Camino Real and Birch Street is closed to cars at present, and construction can affect access. Terún, an Italian restaurant with wood-fired pizza, and Zareen's, which serves Pakistani and Indian food, are both on California Avenue.
The two farmers markets never share a day. The Downtown Palo Alto Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 8 AM to noon on Gilman Street. The California Avenue Farmers Market runs Sundays from 9 AM to 1 PM on California Avenue, between El Camino Real and Birch Street. Both list themselves as year-round, so you can visit both in one weekend.
The city also runs its own centers. Lucie Stern Community Center is a theatre and recreation complex built in 1934. Cubberley Community Center has meeting, dance, fitness and performance space. Mitchell Park Community Center has meeting rooms and fitness and dance space, and Magical Bridge Playground, in Mitchell Park, has accessible play equipment and retreat spaces and opens at sunrise. The Palo Alto Art Center has galleries, the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo has a museum and a zoo, and City Hall hosts the council's meetings. The city's libraries are Downtown Library, Mitchell Park Library and Rinconada Library. Each operator sets its own hours and access rules, and they can change, so check before you go.
A public neighborhood directory maps named areas such as Professorville, Crescent Park, Old Palo Alto, College Terrace and Barron Park. Those names are useful for searching, but they are not legally fixed lines.

What is the weather like in Palo Alto?

The weather figures here come from NOAA's Palo Alto station and its 1991 to 2020 normals. The station records 15.12 inches of rain a year and 12.0 days a year with a high of 90°F or more. That count includes days that reach exactly 90°F, because a count of days strictly above 90°F was not available.
Palo Alto temperature normals, NOAA Palo Alto station, 1991 to 2020, as of 15 October 2026.
MeasureValue
Mean annual temperature58.5°F
January, average high and low57.8°F and 39.0°F
July, average high and low79.4°F and 55.7°F
These are station normals. They are not today's weather, and they are not a reading for every part of the city.

How long does it take to get anywhere from Palo Alto?

This page gives no door-to-door travel times, because none was measured from a fixed starting point. It gives the rail and bus lines you would use and one scheduled train time.
Caltrain is the rail line. Two Caltrain stations sit inside the city, Palo Alto station and California Avenue station, and they have different stopping patterns. Local, Limited and Express trains all stop at Palo Alto, while Express trains skip California Avenue. Express Train 507 leaves Palo Alto at 7:43 AM and reaches San Francisco at 8:22 AM, a scheduled 39 minutes from station to station. On the way it stops at Redwood City, Hillsdale, San Mateo, Millbrae, South San Francisco and 22nd Street.
That 39 minutes counts only the ride. It leaves out your walk to the station, your wait on the platform, any transfer and your walk at the other end. It is a scheduled time, not an observed one, taken from the Caltrain timetable that took effect on 31 January 2026.
BART does not enter Palo Alto. The Caltrain and BART connection is at Millbrae, outside the city, so a rail trip to San Francisco International Airport needs a transfer there.
Some destinations sit outside the city. Stanford University's main campus is in unincorporated Stanford, and Stanford Hospital sits on the adjacent medical campus. Stanford Research Park is inside Palo Alto. The Googleplex is in Mountain View.

For cycling, Bryant Street Bicycle Boulevard is the named route. The rail line, the creeks and the major roads shape which routes connect, so the exact start and end points matter more than the citywide score. Proposed downtown changes along that corridor are concepts and not decisions.

Which schools serve Palo Alto, and how are they assigned?

The Palo Alto Unified School District, known as PAUSD, serves the city, but the city limit and the district boundary do not match. Some Palo Alto addresses are outside PAUSD, and some district addresses are in Los Altos Hills or Portola Valley. Placement starts with an address check and then moves to district registration, so no single elementary or middle school covers the whole city. A house next door can be placed differently, so confirm each address on its own.
Choice programs and transfers are separate from address-based placement. For students entering middle school in 2026 to 2027, the district lists Connections at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School, Sustainability at Ellen Fletcher Middle School and language immersion at Frank S. Greene Jr. Middle School.
As geography, the district's elementary schools in the city are Addison, Barron Park, Duveneck, El Carmelo, Fairmeadow, Herbert Hoover, Juana Briones, Ohlone, Palo Verde and Walter Hays. Escondido and Lucille M. Nixon sit on the Stanford campus, outside the city. The middle schools are Ellen Fletcher, Frank S. Greene Jr. and Jane Lathrop Stanford, and the high schools in the city are Henry M. Gunn and Palo Alto High. Palo Alto Middle College High is in Los Altos Hills, with its own enrollment program.

Where can I check schools and crime information for Palo Alto?

Big Data Realty does not rate schools or neighborhoods. Ratings and reviews are on GreatSchools. The district's PAUSD School Finder shows which school an address is placed in, and PAUSD makes the final placement. The state publishes official school reports on the California School Dashboard. Check them for the most recent information, because boundaries and reports change every school year.
For crime information, check the most recent reports directly with the Palo Alto Police Department's crime statistics page.

Who does Palo Alto suit?

Your own priorities decide this, and the page can only set out the trade.
- If you want a rail line inside the city, Palo Alto has two Caltrain stations, and you pick the one whose stopping pattern fits your trip.
- If you want to ride a bicycle for errands, the citywide Bike Score is the highest of the three scores, but the route from your address is what counts.
- If you want weekend markets, Saturday is downtown and Sunday is on California Avenue.
- If you rely on BART, Palo Alto has no BART station, so plan on a transfer at Millbrae.
- If you need to know a school assignment before you decide, check the address with the district first.
Menlo Park, Los Altos and Mountain View are nearby cities to set beside Palo Alto when walking, rail and the form of the houses matter to you.

Common questions

No. BART has no station inside Palo Alto. The Caltrain and BART connection is at Millbrae, outside the city, so you ride Caltrain to Millbrae and transfer. Palo Alto has two Caltrain stations of its own, Palo Alto and California Avenue, and the two do not share the same stopping pattern, as of 15 October 2026.
